3D Printing Essentials for Dentistry
Course 1: Models & Nightguards
Saturday, January 25, 2025 on Annacis Island [Vancouver]
Course Overview:
“3D Printing Essentials for Dentistry” is a practical course designed to help dental professionals integrate 3D printing into their practice. Participants will learn the fundamentals of dental 3D printing, including what to know before starting, the basic workflow, and how to clean up intraoral scan data.
The course covers designing various models—hinge articulated, orthodontic, bone, indexed, and Geller—as well as nightguards and splints, including Michigan, flat-plane, and NTI designs. Attendees will also learn how to nest models for printing, post-process printed items, and explore other innovative use cases for dental 3D printing.
Hands-on training with Medit and Rayware software ensures participants can design, print, and finish high-quality models and nightguards confidently and efficiently. This course is ideal for dental professionals seeking to harness the power of 3D printing to enhance patient care and streamline workflows.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand and compare the different 3D printing technologies used in dental applications.
- Identify and explain the three key types of software (acquisition, CAD, slicer) required for 3D printing in the dental office.
- Use Medit Splint software to design a basic nightguard for clinical use.
- Use Medit Model software to create a hollow model for dental applications.
- Explain and apply the principles of nesting and supporting 3D prints.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using Rayware software to nest and support prints effectively.
- Understand and implement proper resin safety protocols, including differentiating between biocompatible and non-biocompatible resins.
- Perform the essential steps for post-processing 3D-printed dental models, including washing, curing, and finishing.
Participants will be asked to bring their own laptops with Medit preinstalled.

Instructors:
Dr. Jonathan Tsang, B.Sc, DMD, DABOI, FAAID
Dr. Tsang attended the University of British Columbia where he studied mathematics before heading to Philadelphia to study at Temple University School of Dentistry, one of the oldest dental schools in North America. Upon graduating, Dr. Tsang returned to his home town of Abbotsford to open his dental practice.
Dr. Tsang is Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/ Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID), a designation shared by fewer than 50 dentists in all of Canada. Certification by the ABOI/ID attests to the fact that Dr. Tsang has demonstrated knowledge, ability, and proficiency in implant dentistry through a rigorous examination process. He is an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and an active member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the Canadian Dental Association, and the British Columbia Dental Association.
He is an avid believer in continuing his education and over a hundred hours of extra courses each year on top of being an active member in several study clubs. In 2011 he graduated from an AAID [American Academy of Implant Dentistry] Vancouver MaxiCourse, one of the most well-respected and comprehensive, international training programs in implant dentistry. He is now Co-Director of the Vancouver MaxiCourse alongside Dr. William Liang. He is an active speaker and mentor at our various dental implant education programs.
Dr. Philip Kim, B.Sc, DMD, AFAAID
Dr. Philip Kim was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. During his formative years he spent many hours helping his parents run and operate the family convenience store. Dr. Kim then obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Computing Sciences at the University of Alberta prior to moving to Winnipeg to complete dental school in 2010.
Dr. Kim has a genuine passion for keeping up with the technological trends in dentistry and cherishes the opportunity to care for patients in the Vancouver community. He is also an alumnus of the AAID Vancouver MaxiCourse, a credentialed Associate Fellow of the AAID, and an active member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
